My name is
Chris Williams, I'm the guy behind The Green Collar Job Guide for College Students. I've been working in the alternative energy and sustainability industry for 3 years, since my junior year at Babson College. I'm 23 and I live in Boston. I created the Green College Job Guide to answer questions I'm always asked and to help students turn their passion into a career. The guide is a compilation of everything I've learned about the industry in my career.
The best part about all of this is the response I’ve been receiving from people like you. All of the thanks and praise for my hard work has driven me to work even harder to continue to update the information and provide the best information about finding a job in the green collar industry.
I smile each time I hear that someone got a job or internship because of me. Your contributions through your comments and continued use of The Green Collar J are very much appreciated.
If you’re new, again I’m here to help you, so if you have any questions or comments (or suggestions!) about anything, please feel free to
contact me anytime.

You're here, so you already know the alternative energy industry is super cool. But the industry is also growing rapidly and there are plenty of jobs in it.
Here's a couple quick stats that will convince you, if you're not already:
Green Collar VS Traditional Industries
Finding a green collar is very different than traditional, more established industries, like consulting, marketing, or accounting in many significant ways:
- Rapid growth - Creating a huge demand for a skilled, passionate workforce
- No experts - The industry is too new to be filled with experts. Everyone needs to trained and be able to learn quickly
- No Clear Career Path - Its the wild west, anything goes and the old rules don't apply
This creates several problems for traditional college career service departments to help you, mainly because they are not familiar with the new industry. If you go to your career development office and ask them about a career in consulting, accounting or finance, they will have plenty of resources, contacts and answers for you because they've done it thousands of times.
However, green collar jobs are completely new. If you were to ask the same career services department for resources, contacts, or help in the alternative energy, green or solar industries, like I did, they will be a lot less helpful. This is not because they're not well trained and are not smart, on the contrary. Its just because the industry is so new and no one knows which way is up.
The rapid growth has created an industry where there is huge demand, but few people to to fill the demand. The fact that the industry is so new means that unlike traditional industry, few experts exist. Lastly, there is no clear career path. If you want to be an accountant, you know and can find the EXACT steps you must take, what scores you need to make, the schools you need to go to, and the internships that will help you out.
This creates a huge opportunity for students to fill the demand. However, new skills and strategies need to be learned and applied to the industry.
What this isn't
- This is not some kind of 'get rich quick scheme' nor is it guaranteed to work.
- I give you the tools and resources, but you need to put the work in. This is information, resources, and tips that I've gathered from working in the industry for 3 years.
- This is not something that I've made up. This is information and tactics that I've personally used to enter the industry and that I continue to use to develop professionally and keep up to date with industry developments.
- Not only will I share information that has worked but I will also share what HAS NOT worked
- This isn't a shiny story of how I'm perfect. I will also share with you the tactics that DID NOT work, so that you will not make the same mistake twice.
Yes, This Costs Money
On the flip side, you're getting information that took me 3 years and many jobs to figure out for a low price. You could find all this information on your own, but it would take you a long time and some missed opportunities. If you're a junior looking for a sustainable internship or a senior looking for an alternative energy job you need to minimize your learning curve, and get in the industry soon on the ground floor.
For less than the price of a text book you'll get the resources and a step by step guide of how to turn your passion and existing education into a career.

Here's the outline of the guide:
Section 1: Understanding the Technologies and Concepts The single and most critical part to understanding the industry is knowing and understanding the basic concepts and technologies that are driving it. You will not be able to market, sell, finance or develop something that you do not understand.
Section 1 Will Include:- One page technical document that describe the fundamentals for each technology (geothermal, solar PV, solar thermal, energy efficiency, green building) written in plain English.

The renewable energy and green building industries are so vast and becoming larger that it can be daunting when you look at them from the outside. The good news is, after understanding the technology and the industry you'll have a better understanding of what you'll want to do for work. For good measure, I've created a complete guide for you. Section 4: Make Friends Some people call this 'networking' but in the green industry we're all friends because we're saving the world. Making friends is about building your circle of contacts that can help to guide you, provide you with references and referrals and ideas for your job search.
A reference or introduction is 100 times more valuable than a cold email or call. Section 4 Will Provide:

Section 6: Get your Foot in the Door After you have a handful of companies you want to work with you need to get your foot in the door.
